Mont Saint Michel, France

Mont Saint Michel, France
Mont Saint Michel was the first French site to be added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites in 1979. Mont Saint Michel is one of the most remarkable examples of medieval architecture in the whole world. Together with its surroundings, Mont Saint Michel is simply breathtaking.

Mont Saint Michel stands like a beacon of light in the flat landscape, almost like taken from a fairytale or a movie.

Mont Saint Michel’s popularity as a centre of pilgrimage did however decrease with the Reformation which began in early 16th century.
In the period of Hundred Years War between France and England, the Mont Saint Michel was the last resort for French. It was defended by 119 knights who swore to protect it till their last breathe. For 30 years Englishmen could not seize this fortress and had to retreat. Their troops were so angry that they destroyed all buildings located behind the castle walls.

The castle even used to be the 300-men prison for some time. However, in 1863 it got completely another appearance, the prison was abolished and the castle itself was restored.

In Mont Saint Michel there is historical museum where quite a big collection of paintings, sculptures, ancient items and other valuable items are stored. The visitors' attention is usually attracted to the huge periscope of the XIX century by use of which it is possible to observe the outskirts. Also, there is the Archeoscope museum where the visitors can get to know the history of its creation and other interesting information about the life of Mont Saint Michel.
